Cibeles fashion show, Madrid: the outsiders

Cibeles fashion show, Madrid: the outsiders

THE WRITE UP

This year the models had to have a public weigh-in. Very reminiscent of heavy weight boxing, but literally on the other end of the scales.

The models for the 46th Cibeles Fashion Show in Madrid, needed a minimum body-mass index (BMI) of 18 to be eligible to take part in the event. According to Wikipedia, a BMI of less than 18.5 is an indication that the person is underweight. A report by EFE News Agency in the El Pais gave a figure of 56 models being weighed and measured. It seems that the guys were not weighed. (EFE/El Pais stories in Spanish)

The show itself was held at the Retiro Park, in the centre of Madrid, which is regarded by some as the lungs of the city. A good reason to go out and protest. The protesters that objected to the show being held in the park were concerned with the pollution from the fumes coming out of the pavilion and more importantly, damage to the roots of trees around the event.

This was widely reported in the Spanish media, el Mundo (in Spanish) included photos of the protesters. As a comparison, the Madrid Book Fair is held on the same spot every May, and this year there were 344 Kiosk type book stalls. For what it is worth, I could not find any reports of protesters for this event. Irrespective of how convenient this event was for the trees, it was certainly a convenient location for those taking part. The park is only a short taxi ride from the centre of Madrid.

Back to the fashion show; 36 Spanish designers exhibiting their new creations at the 46 edition of Pasarela Cibeles. There was the famous, for those who know about these things (my friend K and I don't), Agatha Ruiz de la Prada which the Javno website described as an, "outlaw running away from realism..." with her "..candy style tradition."

We were more impressed with Juana Martin who seemed to belong as much on the catwalk as the models exhibiting her wares. Maybe the fact that she was the only designer we saw (on or off screen) might have something to do with this opinion; or maybe the BMI factor. (Right: black by Martin). As for the clothes themselves, I suggest you have a look at the orgnaiser's web site where they have videos and photos from all the designers.

We went on the last day of the show, 21st September, Friday afternoon, which was probably the worst time to go. By this time most people would have had enough of fashion.

Although this was a reccy mission we wanted to find out who-was-who and what-was-in and what-was-out this season. We quickly discovered that we were nobody (no invitation) and we were certainly going to stay out (the bouncers had that look on their face).

In other words, this is a photo essay of who was out of the fashion show; the outsiders.
